Description

I don’t know about you, but during the past few years, this spicy-sweet condiment has completely taken over our home. Drizzled over pizza, biscuits, fried chicken, baked salmon, shrimp boil, roasted vegetables, baked brie, cornbread, or corn on the cob? Sure, please. Stirred into a batch of salad dressing, a cup of hot tea (or hot toddy!), or your next cocktail? Fantastic concept. served on a charcuterie board or as a dipping for fries or chicken fingers? Without a doubt. In many dishes where you might frequently just use a simple sweetener, that surprise heat adds the appropriate added kick. Additionally, I have no doubt that you will adore it if you have never had it before!

These days, you can get hot honey online or at your neighborhood grocery store, but it’s usually far less expensive to create a batch yourself due to the huge markup. It’s also quite simple and quick to prepare at home. For each batch of handcrafted hot honey, you also get to select the type of hot peppers and the degree of heat. To begin, all you need is three supplies and fifteen to twenty minutes.

Additionally, as the holidays are quickly approaching, I wanted to add that hot honey makes excellent homemade gifts!Your friends and family will appreciate it if you make a fast pot of hot honey, acquire some adorable jars (you can use these adorable honey bear bottles, get my favorite small tulip jars, or rinse and reuse some old jam jars).

Ingredients

1 cup honey

One freshly sliced jalapeño pepper or two to three teaspoons of crushed red pepper flakes

1 to 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Simmer. In a medium sauté pan or skillet, add the honey and crushed red pepper flakes (or jalapeño slices). Simmer the honey very gently over medium heat. After giving the mixture a little toss, take the pan off of the burner.
  • Take a nap. To allow the flavors to seep in, let the mixture sit for ten to fifteen minutes.
  • Taste. To determine the degree of heat, quickly taste the honey. If you prefer a spicier honey, you can add more red pepper flakes (or jalapeño slices) and/or prolong the infusion period.
  • Strain. After the honey reaches the temperature you want, filter it into a clean storage jar using a fine mesh strainer. Add the apple cider vinegar and stir until well mixed.
  • Store or serve. Use the honey right away, or refer to the storage guidelines below.

Ways To Use Hot Honey

Are you looking for some creative ways to use hot honey? There are countless choices, but here are some of my favorites:

  • Pizza: I have an obsession with drizzling any kind of pizza, but I think it goes especially great with pepperoni.
  • Breads and biscuits: Drizzling hot honey over a warm biscuit, a piece of cornbread, or French toast is quite delicious. But you may also sprinkle it on top of any bread you like.
  • Vegetables: Drizzle your preferred stir-fried or grilled vegetables. It tastes well with corn on the cob as well!
  • Meats, fish, and tofu: A traditional dish is hot honey chicken wings! It’s also great to drizzle hot honey over popular meats like steak, hog, shrimp, sausage, bacon, fish, scallops, and tofu.
  • Fried foods: Another perfect combination is hot honey fried chicken (or fried fish). Additionally, it tastes great on french fries and other fried dishes.
  • Charcuterie boards: Drizzle hot honey over a wheel of baked brie or use it as a dipper with your next cheese board.
  • Vinaigrettes: You may add a little heat and sweetness to your favorite salad dressing by using hot honey.
  • Desserts: Pour it over cheesecakes, brownies, ice cream, and more.
  • Drinks and cocktails: Use hot honey as a spicy sweetener in your next cocktail (I particularly like it in an old-fashioned mojito or gimlet) or stir it into your next hot cup of tea or hot toddy.

Notes

Storage guidelines: Allow heated honey to cool to room temperature before storing it. After that, cover the jar and keep it at room temperature for up to three months. (If you’re using fresh peppers, like jalapeños, you’ll need to preserve the spicy honey in the refrigerated for up to 1 week.)
